A day exploring Dam Sen for VAS Kindergarteners: Growing up close to nature

This April field trip to Dam Sen Cultural Park brought VAS Kindergarteners across the system a  truly fulfilling day. They explored nature, played with friends, and learned in a lively environment  beyond the classroom.

The journey began at the Aquarium, a miniature ocean home to hundreds of fascinating marine  species such as arowana, coral reefs, and giant fish. The children were excited to “step into the  ocean,” eagerly observing and asking questions about the vibrant underwater world.

Continuing the experience, the children became “little scientists” through creative STEM  activities such as planting in recycled cups, making leaf art, and designing eco-messages. These hands-on activities helped develop fine motor skills, creativity, and an early awareness of  living in harmony with nature.

The journey then moved to the zoo area, where the children met animals they had previously  only seen on TV, including gibbons, crocodiles, bears, hippos, and peacocks. Observing,  interacting with, and feeding the animals helped the children become more confident while  nurturing empathy and a sense of responsibility toward living creatures.

To avoid the midday heat, the children enjoyed relaxing moments filled with laughter during the  “Dinosaur Rescue” performance and puppet shows. They confidently raised their hands, joined  stage activities with the lively host, and expressed themselves freely. Light entertainment such  as the carousel, mini train, and monorail extended the fun, allowing them to release energy and  strengthen bonds with friends.

It was a day to play with joy and learn with excitement, where parents can see their children  growing more confident and independent, and where childhood becomes richer with beautiful  memories.

Applying “backward planning” to design your children’s learning journey

If Grade 12 is seen as the “finish line”, the key question parents should ask is: What do my children need by that point, not only to gain admission to their desired universities, but also to be fully prepared for the future? At a recent online seminar hosted by the Vietnam Australia International School (VAS), education experts highlighted the importance of a “backward planning” mindset. This approach starts with the end goal and works backwards to design a suitable learning pathway from the very beginning.
