Be the VAS Changeneration – Innovating with Kindness

Building on the momentum of last year’s “Be the VAS Changeneration”, we proudly take our vision further this school year with a deeper and more purposeful direction: Innovating with Kindness.

Our core identity as the VAS Changeneration remains unchanged - a generation of changemakers equipped to take on real-world challenges. But this year, we sharpen our focus: Innovation is no longer just about bold ideas or cutting-edge technology. Its true power is only realized when it is guided by empathy, integrity, and kindness.

Why “Kindness”?

In an age shaped by rapid technological advancement, global competition, and overwhelming information, innovation touches every part of our lives - from how we think and learn, to how we create and connect. Yet not all innovations serve the greater good.

While “war” in the past was fought with fire and smoke, today it takes on more subtle forms - battles of knowledge, economic power, cultural influence, and technological dominance between nations. Without a moral compass, even the most advanced innovations can become divisive, exploitative, or harmful.

On an individual level, we face similar choices every day. Students, creators, and digital citizens alike are constantly engaging with tools and technologies that can either uplift or isolate, inform or mislead, connect or divide. The question is no longer just what we can do - but why and how do we do it.

That is why Kindness is not just a value, it’s a strategy - a foundation that helps us choose wisely:

  • To ask not just “Can we?” but “Should we?”
  • To think not only about what works but what’s right.
  • To build not just for efficiency, but for equity, dignity, and human well-being.

By embedding kindness into our innovative mindset, we commit to developing not only brilliant minds but also big hearts. We empower future leaders who solve problems ethically, create responsibly, and bring lasting impact - not just through intelligence, but through compassion.

What does “Innovating with Kindness” truly mean in action?

  • Empathetic problem-solving: True innovation begins with understanding. Before designing solutions, we listen deeply and view the world through the eyes of others - recognizing not just their needs, but also their hopes, fears, and lived experiences.
  • Positive & Inclusive Impact: We use creativity not to dominate or profit, but to uplift, connect, and empower others. Success is measured by the lives we touch and the sense of belonging we help create. When students innovate with kindness, they lead differently - dreaming boldly while acting with empathy and responsibility. Whether they’re building a project, supporting a peer, or standing up for fairness, they become changemakers whose impact endures because it is rooted in compassion and guided by purpose.
  • Ethical creation: True innovation asks us to pause and reflect on the ripple effects of what we make. Innovation must be responsible. Whether in technology, the arts, science, or social initiatives, we design with foresight - considering the long-term impact on people’s well-being and the planet. Creativity should protect dignity, promote sustainability, and uplift communities.

As members of the VAS Changeneration, our students are challenged to lead the future not with ego or ambition alone - but with heart, responsibility, and vision. Because the best changemakers don’t just create impact - they do it with kindness, and that’s what makes change last.

Applying “backward planning” to design your children’s learning journey

If Grade 12 is seen as the “finish line”, the key question parents should ask is: What do my children need by that point, not only to gain admission to their desired universities, but also to be fully prepared for the future? At a recent online seminar hosted by the Vietnam Australia International School (VAS), education experts highlighted the importance of a “backward planning” mindset. This approach starts with the end goal and works backwards to design a suitable learning pathway from the very beginning.
