GO GREEN, DO ORGANIC FARMING – VAS GARDEN HILLS MEGA CAMPUS

As part of a series of activities under the Green Year theme, in October, students of grades 7 and 10 from Garden Hills Campus launched an Organic Vegetables Planting project in the school’s garden without using fertilizers and pesticides. Under the guidance of teachers of Biology and Technology, the students sowed seeds in Tribat nutritious soil - a special type of soil to grow clean vegetables. The soil has enough nutrients, so the vegetables grew naturally by being watered only, not added any other fertilizer or substances.

After nearly a month of planting and caring, on Friday afternoon of November 8, 2019, students harvested and gained about 30 kg of organic vegetables. To inspire other people to go green, they used banana leaves and degradable strings to pack vegetables before having them sold in the market. Their products have received a warm response from other students, teachers, and parents of Garden Hills community. Profits from the sale will be used for upcoming learning projects and reinvested in their classes’ vegetable gardens in the second semester. After finishing the harvest, students were also instructed by their teachers how to add soil, add vermicompost to improve soil nutrients and prepare for the next seeding season.

The Clean Vegetable Project not only helps students foster their passion for science and nature but also contributes to raising the awareness of environmental protection. At the same time, seeding and nurturing vegetable activities are an effective way to help children practice their knowledge and improve life skills. Besides, students have chance to improve teamwork skills, team spirit, and leadership skills when working together to complete a task.
